Super-fine super-lines

March 7th, 2013 No comments

So what’s this braided line, Dyneema and Spectra? They are different names for knitted polyetheleyne filaments – spiderweb-thin filaments. A small thing, but it’s been instrumental in changing the way a lot of people fish

The filaments are fused or “knitted” into multi-strand braid with X3, X4, and X8 ply ratings. There are many variables, but generally, you are paying for knitting time. Less knitting time,  means looser weave and flatter braid. More knitting time results in rounder line, which casts better and is more durable. Same material, it’s what they do with it.

With the development of these super-fine super-lines, you can now fish deeper and for bigger fish, with what used to be considered tiny trout fishing or sprat-catching, sized rod and reel.

A major advantage of braid is that you can present a tiny 15g lure or jig to fish on the sea floor without the parachute-like drag effect of traditional monofilament. Also, small, snack sized lures are generally more attractive to the larger fish. Yay!

Braid is tougher than steel. It has no stretch, so you feel the bite and it’s thinner than momofilament (of a similar breaking strain) so you can cast further. Braid also outlasts monofilament, and is substantially less affected by currents.

The size/PE rating system is mad. For example PE:1 can be 12lb in one brand and in another 25lb. Some 10lb rating breaks at 25lb; others at 15lb or 10lb. Confusing? Yes. Talk to a well informed tackle supplier.

When should you use braid? As general guide, use braid for lure fishing. A good rule is if you use braid for fishing with bait, put a heavy weight on the end.

So. What’s the best braid to use? Not the cheapest. Stick to your knitting, as they say. An X8 ply braid costs 10-15% more when you buy it, but it’s ultimately better value.

Braid size guide:
Softbaiting, 10-12lb; inchiku/slow jig,10-15lb; deep water snapper, 10-20lb; stick bait/popper, 50-80lb; heavy jigging/puka 50-100lb.

From liver to lure

Flashback… In the 1950s and 60s a snapper would swim past your cotton hand-line and rusty hook. Impaled on that hook might have been kerosene-soaked liver. Your chilly bin was a hessian sack and your trouser pocket was your tackle box.

Fast forward… Today, you could fish with your 99% quatre-axial carbon rod, with titanium-framed guides with silicone carbide inserts – not to mention the spiderweb-thin line that you can’t break bare-handed, for fear of cutting yourself to the bone. Your fishing reel is likely waterproof with digitally-cut gears and more bearings than two roller-skates. But do the fish really care?

A lot of fishing is seen today as a more technical sport and relaxing hobby. Back in the day more of us were  hunter-gatherers. With new methods and lures, brought about by the development of braided super lines, comes a need for rods and reels that work the lures effectively.

Lure fishing requires us to cast, drop and jiggle lures such as inchikus, butterfly jigs, soft-baits, stick-baits and poppers. Rod and reel choice makes a big difference to your increased success with these new methods. For example, if you use a rod that’s too stiff for inchikus your hookup rate goes down when the fish are shy or finicky. If your popper rod is too soft your popper won’t bloop, the kingfish will get bored and he’ll go elsewhere.

Ultimately, fish don’t care what you use. When the fishing is hot, kerosene-soaked liver will do the job. But the challenge of sussing out a new methods and becoming proficient at them in all bite conditions is very satisfying, and that’s where it becomes a sport. Now your 21st century fast taper carbon rod and mighty reel will show its true value.

GoFish introduces Hearty Rise fishing rods to New Zealand.

September 11th, 2012 No comments

Go Fish introduces Hearty Rise rods from the giant Taiwanese Etuoh corporation. Founded in 1976, Etuoh produce high-quality fishing rods for themselves and other high-profile brands. Etuoh invests huge capital in research and development to bring you the best rods. Hearty Rise rods feature the best of the latest technology. Features like Net -V engineering, SNVC technology, high-quality Japanese carbon and, of course, Fuji guides and reel seats.

These include the first sea bass and shore jigging rods on the NZ market.

Hearty Rise Jig Rise braid Inchiku / light braid  spin & overhead rods

Hearty Rise Jig Rise light braid rods are ideal for light inchiku fishing, small jigs and lures. The Jig Rise has a moderate taper rod so it’s a good all-round rod rather than a task-specific parabolic rod.

SNVC technology blanks have less resin and more high modulus carbon, which makes the rods lighter and more resilient.

VNET-II construction, using Japanese carbon in a new-tech net-shaped weave, creates a seamless blank.

Available in 90g and 120g spin and overhead models.

Hearty Rise Stalker spin rod

Hearty Rise Stalker spinning rods are ideal for soft bait fishing, twitching, light jigs and small top-water lures. The Stalker has an ultra fast taper, high power blank construction with a 1/6 bend ratio. The Stalker‘s action makes for easy hook sets, yet allows ease of lure movement and, as the name suggests, “stalking” with increased accuracy when fishing the wash.

SNVC technology blanks have less resin and more high modulus carbon, which makes the rods lighter and more resilient.

VNET-II construction, using Japanese carbon in a new-tech net-shaped weave, creates a light, seamless blank.

Available in 7’3″ and 8′ spin.

Hearty Rise Light Blue II  mechanical / Japanese  jigging  spin & overhead rod

Hearty Rise Light blue II. Light  in name only. This is one tough rod built for full-on mechanical/Japanese  jigging and puka fishing. The Light blue II has a fast, high-power blank construction with a 3/7 bend ratio. The Light blue II‘s action makes for easy jig flows, but allows the needed lift when a kingfish has his head down.

VNET-II construction, using high modulus Japanese carbon in a new-tech net-shaped weave, creates a light, seamless blank.

Available in spin & overhead.

Hearty Rise Marvelous spin & overhead softbait and lure rod

Hearty Rise Marvelous rods are a good, budget-conscious choice for soft bait fishing, twitching and light jigs and small top water lures. The Marvelous has a fast-taper high power blank construction with a 3/7 bend ratio. The  action makes for easy hook sets, but allows ease of lure movement.

VNET-II construction, using Japanese carbon in a new-tech net-shaped weave, creates a light, seamless blank.

Available in 7′ spin and overhead.

Hearty Rise Pisces shore jig rod

Hearty Rise Pisces shore jig rods rods  are made for casting top-water lures. The Pisces has a ultra-flexible power blank for unrivaled feedback from the lure, allowing the angler to control the lure with ease.

SNVC technology blanks have less resin and more high modulus carbon, which makes the rods lighter and more resilient.

VNET-II construction, using Japanese carbon in a new-tech net-shaped weave, creates a light, seamless blank.

The Pisces has titanium mesh on the joints for unparalleled strength.

Available in9’5″ spin.

Hearty Rise Snake Head overhead pitch bait – stick bait rod

Hearty rise –  Snake head overhead  rods  are built tough for casting up to 230g, poppers , sticksbaits and top water lures. The Snake head  has a fast taper blank construction with a 3/7 bend ratio. The Snake head action makes for instant control of lures and the fish

VNET-II construction, using Japanese carbon in a new-tech net-shaped weave, creates a light, seamless blank.

Available in 8’3″ spin.

  • VNET-II  construction
  • 9.9% carbon from Japan

Hearty Rise Black Snake popping rod 802XXXH

Hearty rise –  Black snake popping rods rod, unashamedly a hard core popper rod , easy casting and direct feedback to the popper to get it working effectively. The Black snakes’ actions makes for easy hook sets and plenty of power to restrain a hard running fish.

VNET-II construction using Japanese carbon in a new tech net -shape weave, creating a seamless blank.

Available in spin  8’3″

Hearty Rise Seabass force II  Seabass rod

Hearty rise –  Seabass force II  rods are ideal for light lure casting, also would make a good 1-3kg light tackle rod for monofilament IGFA class fishing. The Slight and sensitive tip sends all bite signals and lure movements to the angler instantly.  The Seabass force II has an elegant parabolic curve.

GoFish introduces Sea bass rods to New Zealand

VNET-II construction using Japanese carbon in a new tech net -shape weave, creating a seamless blank.

Available in spin 8’1′

Hearty Rise Evolution overhead rods

Hearty Rise Evolution overhead rods are the overhead rods you’ve been looking for. Evolution are fast-taper but not too stiff. The rod tip moves before the fish senses you are there, and the the power comes on when you set the hook. Evolution is a good, more traditional-length, light jigging, braid or mono rod.

VNET-II construction, using Japanese carbon in a new-tech net-shaped weave, creates a light, seamless blank.

Ducro 10 custom Inchiku reel – light jigging reel.

Ducro 10 custom Inchiku reel –  light jigging reel.

Custom made for it!

How cool is this, a small lever drag fishing reel for light jigging and inchikus fishing,

Approx. 15lb max drag, but you only need to fish it about 3-4kg max for Inchikus.

The spool is only 23mm wide!

Casts like a dream, excellent free spool for a lever drag 100%, we cast a 1/2 oz jig head far enough!

If you doing a search for fishing reels online, and want a small strong reel for braid, we mean small ! the Ducro 10 is one of the few options available, and possibly the only one in left hand. Small round profile bait-casters and low profile reels have a “cotter pin” engagement to the pinion gear so are not really super tough, especially  when engaging the reel while a fish is running,  you get that click click click as the reel tries to engage the cotter pin into the pinion, its not a fault but it does damage the parts over time and your anti reverse is only a small dog usually, which inevitably get damaged as the reel kicks into gear.

The first small star drag reel in the world for braid was the ground breaking Shimano Trinidad 10,  anti reverse bearing and dog, with a key way block and  shaft to engage the reel while a fish is running.

  • 5.2:1 ratio
  • 300m 30lb braid
  • Eva power handle
  • Carbon drags
  • helical cut stainless gears.
  • Mute docking and one way bearing.
  •  left hand or right hand fishing reels in stock
  • Custom Made in Taiwan
